Questions & Answers

Biblical Text: Matthew 10:1-15
Guidelines for Individual Playdates

Value of This Activity:

Provides encouragement to ask more questions than we can possibly answer. Also gives an opportunity for us to exercise “pushing the limits” by giving expression to the ridiculous. Widens our mind and our curiosity and our imagination.

To Begin . . .

Spend a moment in quiet prayer. If you wish, begin by freewriting for 3-5 minutes. Just let the pen empty out your concerns and thanksgiving for the day. Breathe.

How to Play . . .

  1. Read Matthew 10:1-15.
  2. For each verse in the text, write out (at least) one question. Ideally, these will be questions that you do not (think you already) know the answer to. Ask strange questions. Ask curious questions. Ask funny questions. You might even risk asking a profound question. Certainly, ask a child’s question (which tend to be the profound ones). Be sure you include questions of the following types:
    • Who?
    • What?
    • When?
    • Where?
    • How?
    • Why?
    • What if?
    • Wouldn’t you think?
  3. On another day come back and read your questions. Make up answers to the questions you asked. Your answers do not have to be logical or correct or researched. Just make up some answers. Play with this. Be a little (or a lot) silly.
  4. After you’ve had fun making up answers to all your questions, you might want to spend a little time thinking about what might be the value of doing an activity like this. What thinkest thou?

In Closing . . .

Take a moment to breathe and let the playtime settle around you. Carry your curiosity and insights and questions into the day.
