Biblical Text: John 10:31-42
Taking the Scriptures seriously can be scary at times. The texts sometimes say things that don’t sound “right” according to our human theologies. An attitude and practice of playfulness, under the loving eyes of a Divine Parent, can sometimes allow us to dare a closer, more serious, reading of Scripture. There is always the reassurance, in John 10:35 that “scripture cannot be broken.” Play! This text is safe for you and cannot be broken.
Bible. Pen and Paper. A timer.
Spend a moment in quiet prayer. If you wish, begin by freewriting for 3-5 minutes. Just let the pen empty out your concerns and thanksgiving for the day. Breathe.
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Does it it frighten you to describe yourself as a “god” (or as “a little lower than God”)?
How has God “crowned you with glory and honor”?
Does it feel as though you are blaspheming when you claim that glory and honor?
If you have been born of God, are you, as Jesus implies, a god who walks upon the earth, doing the works of the One who has borne you?
Take a moment to breathe and let the playtime settle around you. Carry your curiosity and insights and questions into the day.
